RICHMOND, Ky. – Four Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball players finished in double figures as the Colonels outlasted Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State Tuesday night in McBrayer Arena, 73-65. The win snapped Eastern's (9-6, 4-3 OVC) three-game losing streak and moves the Colonels one game behind the Eagles (9-6, 5-2) in the league standings.
Sophomore guard Mike Rose led all players with 23 points, his fifth 20-point performance of the season, and also paced EKU with six rebounds. Meanwhile, senior Julian Mascoll came away two points shy of his career high (17 points) while chipping in with seven assists as well.
For Morehead State, Shaun Williams went 7-for-7 from the field to finish with 18 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Maze Stallworth came off the bench to tally 14 second half points.
Eastern shot 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the floor in the opening half and forced 16 MSU turnovers to establish a commanding 40-20 lead at the break. Following a Darnell Dialls dunk with 4:55 remaining, the Colonels still held a comfortable 17-point cushion, 63-46. However, the Eagles put together 10 straight points over the next two minutes to cut the deficit to seven, 63-56.
Morehead State twice managed to creep to within four points in the final two minutes, but Eastern Kentucky sealed the win by netting its last 10 free throw attempts. The Colonels went 17-for-19 (89.5 percent) at the charity stripe in the second stanza to hold off the Morehead rally.
This was the 164th meeting between the rivals as EKU has played Morehead State more than any other opponent in program history. The Colonels lead the all-time series, 98-66, but picked up just their second win in the last nine meetings in McBrayer Arena.
