Colonels Sweep Tennessee-Martin 3-0

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky never trailed while sweeping Tennessee-Martin, 3-0, today at McBrayer Arena. EKU Junior Amanda Wilson led all players with 15 kills and hit .379. Freshman Amanda Fago contributed a double-double to the winning cause, finishing with 14 kills and 10 digs. Prior to the start of the match, EKU honored its lone senior, Brittany Nobilio.

Game scores were 30-21, 30-20 and 30-17. EKU improves to 5-22 and 4-13 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Tennessee-Martin falls to 10-19 overall and 4-13 against league teams.

Junior Bridget Mustard finished with 10 kills and committed just one error in 14 attacks for a .643 hitting percentage. Freshman Kate Hendle totaled a match-high 42 assists and added 10 digs.

Nobilio led a balanced defense with 12 digs and also served up four aces. She now has 2,401 career digs and needs 24 more to move into fourth place on the NCAA career digs list.

Kathryn Sprague led the Skyhawks with 12 kills and hit .346. Anna Gautreau posted a match-high 19 digs.

EKU jumped out to a quick start in game one. Fago’s kill made it 6-1 in favor of the home team. The Colonels went in front 11-3 after a kill by Mustard. Leah Nelson’s kill gave Eastern a 10-point lead, 21-11. Nelson finished off the game for the Colonels with a kill.

In 37 total attacks in game one, Eastern committed just three errors and made 20 kills for a .459 hitting percentage.

Eastern Kentucky got off to a quicker start in the second game. A Tennessee-Martin attack error put the Colonels in front 8-1. Hendle’s service ace made it 15-4. The Skyhawks climbed within seven points on a kill by Sprague, but they would get no closer. A kill by Fago followed by a UTM attack error pushed the lead back to 10, 27-17. Another Skyhawk attack error gave the game to EKU, 30-20.

The Colonels hit .348 in the second game and made just two errors while tallying 18 kills.

Game three was much of the same. A kill by Abbey Blank put Eastern up 4-1. A kill by Lauren Montague followed by a Colonel attack error allowed the Skyhawks to cut the deficit to two points, 10-8. Back-to-back aces by Mustard made it 15-8. A kill by Nelson left EKU in front by 10, 24-14. A Nobilio ace made it a 12-point advantage, 26-14. Eastern Kentucky completed the sweep when Barnhart and Mustard blocked an attack by Montague.

The Skyhawks had just 11 kills and made 12 attack errors in the third game for a -.024 attack percentage.

The Colonels will finish off the home portion of their 2007 schedule on Tuesday when Morehead State visits McBrayer Arena. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
