RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky senior Brittany Nobilio moved into fourth place on the NCAA career digs list after finishing with 24 digs tonight in a 3-0 loss to Morehead State at McBrayer Arena. Junior Amanda Wilson and freshman Amanda Fago led EKU with nine kills each. MSU’s Ashley Doscher recorded a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs. She also hit .312 and had four blocks.
Game scores were 30-25, 30-20 and 30-19. EKU falls to 5-23 on the season and 4-14 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Morehead State sits atop the conference standings with a 15-3 league mark and improves to 21-9 overall.
Kaitlin Craven and Erin Peak each finished with 11 kills for the Eagles. Peak added three service aces.
Nobilio surpassed Pittsburgh’s Megan McGrane’s career total of 2,424 digs to move into fourth place on the NCAA career digs list. Nobilio tied and surpassed McGrane with two digs in the closing moments of the match. With Morehead State at match-point, 29-18, Nobilio dug an attack by Craven and Bridget Mustard’s kill allowed the match to continue. On the next series, Nobilio made the dig that put her into fourth place by herself before Peak ended the match with a kill.
With 2,425 career digs, Nobilio needs just 27 more in EKU’s final two matches of the season to finish her career with the third most digs in NCAA history. She is also on pace to break the NCAA career record for average digs per game. Nobilio’s current career average is 5.90, which is well in front of the record of 5.80 digs per game.
Each time Morehead State tried to pull away in game one, Eastern answered. After a 5-2 start by the Eagles, a kill by Leah Nelson tied the score at 6-6. MSU went in front by six, 15-9, on a kill by Doscher and led 17-11 after a kill by Peak. The Colonels answered with a 5-1 run to draw within two points. Three Morehead State attack errors contributed to the run. A 4-0 spurt pushed the visitors back in front 23-17 but moments later EKU scored five straight, including two kills by Kate Hendle, to make it a 24-23 game. Back-to-back kills by Craven and a Colonel service error made it 27-24 in favor of Morehead. The Eagles scored the final three points of the game to post the 30-25 victory and take a 1-0 advantage.
Morehead State broke open game two with a 12-1 run after a kill by Fago had given the Colonels a 12-10 advantage. Amber Campbell and Doscher each had two kills during the run. Doscher’s second kill capped the run and put the Eagles out in front 22-13. MSU went on to close out the second game by a score of 30-20.
Eastern Kentucky committed 12 errors and only had nine kills in the second game for a -.073 attack percentage.
The Eagles jumped out in front 4-1 to start game three. An EKU attack error made it 12-5 in favor of Morehead State. The Colonels cut the deficit to four, 15-11, on a kill by Wilson, but they would get no closer. An 8-1 run put MSU ahead 23-12. Peak’s kill finished off the game and the match for Morehead.
MSU finished with 19 kills and only four errors in 39 attacks for a .385 hitting percentage in game three.
The Colonels will hit the road for the final two matches of the 2007 season. EKU faces Samford on Friday at 8 p.m., in Birmingham, Ala. Eastern will play at Jacksonville State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
