RICHMOND, Ky. – Nine of the 10 Lady Colonels that suited up for the game scored at least two points and all 10 grabbed at least one rebound in Eastern Kentucky’s 70-37 win over Bluefield State College Tuesday night at McBrayer Arena. Eight Lady Colonels also registered at least one assist and nine players played 15 or more minutes.
Three Lady Colonels (4-6) scored a game-high 15 points. Junior transfer
Sonjia Hoston grabbed six rebounds to go along with her career-best 15 points. Sophomore
Cherie White finished with a game-high nine rebounds and five assists in addition to her 15 points. Freshman
Kayla Drake added three steals and three boards to go along with her 15 points.
Kelly Pawlowski led the Lady Blues (1-7) with 12 points and six rebounds.
Eastern out-rebounded BSC 51-27 and held Bluefield to 28.3 percent shooting from the field.
The two teams opened the game by exchanging three-pointers. Tamika Jefferies knocked down a trey from the left corner for Bluefield State. Drake answered for EKU with a pair of three’s from the left wing, both of which were from behind the men’s three-point line.
Hoston extended the Eastern run to 8-0 with a lay-in off the glass.
Colette Cole banked one off the glass to cap the 14-0 run and give the Lady Colonels a 14-3 lead with 13:43 remaining in the first half. Another triple from behind the men’s three-point line by Drake, this time from the top of the key, extended the lead to 19-5.
A 7-2 run by the Lady Blues cut the deficit to single digits. A three-pointer by Lauren Broyles with 7:44 showing on the clock made it a 21-12 game. Pawlowski’s trey brought BSC to within seven, 24-17, with 6:17 to go in the first half. However, a jumper by
Sarah Fraser-Jones, and steal and lay-up by Drake pushed the Lady Colonel lead back to double figures, 28-17.
Hoston scored six straight points in the paint for EKU to extend the home team’s lead to 13, 34-21, with 3:41 before intermission.

Kaia Kosk's first career basket, a three-pointer from the left wing with three seconds to go, sent Eastern Kentucky to the locker room with a 38-21 lead.
Bluefield State did not score in the final four minutes of the first half.
Eastern scored the first 10 points of the second half, six of which came off baskets by White. Back-to-back buckets by White gave the Lady Colonels a 48-21 lead with 17:04 left to play.
BSC’s scoring drought lasted 7:26, finally coming to an end on a basket by Jefferies with 16:34 remaining in the game.
Eastern led by 20 or more points for the final 18:59 of the game. Hoston’s jumper in the paint with 9:19 to play extended the EKU lead to 30 points, 57-27. Five straight points by White allowed the Lady Colonels to build a 34-point lead, 64-30, with 3:51 showing on the clock.
Eastern Kentucky shot 43.5 percent (30-for-69) from the field for the game.
EKU will return to Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday. The Lady Colonels will face Tennessee State at 6:30 p.m. ET in Nashville, Tenn.
