CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Senior Crystal Jones finished with a double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds), but it wasn't enough as host Southeast Missouri cruised to a 68-52 win Saturday night in the Show Me Center. With the win, the Redhawks (21-6, 16-2 OVC) clinch a share of the OVC regular season title. The Colonels fall to 13-11 overall and 8-9 in conference play.
Ashley Cazee added 12 points for EKU. Sonya Daugherty contributed 13 points to SEMO’s cause. Eastern shot 28.1 percent (16-for-57) from the field for the game. Southeast Missouri made 40 percent (24-of-60) of its shots.
The game remained close until the Redhawks went on a 10-1 run after Jones cut the Eastern deficit to two points with 6:57 left in the first half. Blunt scored five of the 10 points for SEMO and capped it off with a lay-up to put Southeast in front 27-16 with 3:39 remaining before intermission.
Blunt’s jumper with two ticks left on the clock sent the Redhawks to the locker room leading by 13, 34-21.
After SEMO extended its lead to 15 to start the second half, the Lady Colonels scored eight straight. A jumper by Jones brought Eastern to within seven, 36-29, with 16:10 left in the game.
A pair of free throws by Blunt put Southeast Missouri back in front by double digits, 42-31, with 14:59 showing on the clock. Her lay-up with 10:26 remaining extended it to a 14-point advantage, 50-36.
A lay-up by LaTonyah Bentley and a three-pointer from Nadia Mossong cut the deficit to single digits, 55-46, with 5:41 left to play. However, the Lady Colonels would get no closer. Eastern failed to score in the final 2:52.
The Lady Colonels will conclude the 2007-08 regular season with a three-game home stand that begins on Tuesday against Morehead State. Tip-off at McBrayer Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
