RICHMOND, Ky. – Visiting Tennessee State scored 51 second half points while shooting 61.5 percent from the floor to earn an 89-70 victory over the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team Saturday night in McBrayer Arena. The Colonels (14-15, 10-10 OVC) concluded the regular season with five straight conference losses.
Sophomore Adam Leonard (20 points) reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season and also added five assists. Senior Darnell Dialls, playing in his final home game of his collegiate career, chipped in with 15 tallies on 60 percent (6-of-10) shooting.
For Tennessee State, Bruce Price finished with 20 points and a game-high six assists. Three other Tigers recorded double figures – Jerrell Houston (19 points), Gerald Robinson (18) and LaDarious Weaver (12).
The first half was close throughout, featuring eight ties and seven lead changes. Robinson’s second three-pointer of the stanza helped give TSU a slim 38-37 advantage at the break.
Tennessee State took control of the contest at the start of the second half as the Tigers scored 11 of the first 15 points. A Weaver three-pointer with 12:39 remaining gave TSU its first double-digit lead of the game, 61-49. After a Justin Stommes lay-in helped the Colonels cut the deficit to eight points, 61-53, the Tigers responded with an 11-1 run to put the game away.
Eastern Kentucky will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming OVC tournament. The Colonels will play at OVC regular season champion Austin Peay on Tuesday, March 4, in a quarterfinal contest. The two teams met in the OVC championship game last year.
