RICHMOND, Ky. – Following a four-game road swing, the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team returns to McBrayer Arena Tuesday night to host OVC leader Austin Peay. The game, sponsored by UBS, is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
Eastern Kentucky (11-9, 4-5 OVC) concluded the first half of the OVC schedule in a three-way tie for sixth place with Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. The Colonels currently sit just a game behind Eastern Illinois and Murray State for the crucial fourth spot in the league standings.
Through nine OVC games, the Colonels lead the league in three-pointers per game (10.4) and turnover margin (+2.78). Against Morehead State on Jan. 24, EKU committed just seven turnovers, its second lowest mark of the year. However, the Colonels made just six three-pointers, also their second lowest mark of the year.
Austin Peay (12-7, 8-1 OVC) has won six consecutive OVC games to dart to the top of the league standings. The Govs average 81.7 ppg and are shooting 50.7 percent from the floor against OVC competition. Both of those marks are league highs. Senior Drake Reed and junior Wes Channels each average more than 20 ppg against OVC foes. Reed scored 29 points to lead APSU to an 86-80 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday.
Since winning the 2007 OVC championship game over Austin Peay, the Colonels have lost four straight to the Governors including an 82-79 setback earlier this month. Austin Peay leads the all-time series, 56-45.
Following the Austin Peay game, the Colonels are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a home tilt against Tennessee State.
