Game Notes
RICHMOND, Ky. – After playing four straight road games, the Eastern Kentucky women’s basketball team returns to its home court to host Austin Peay on Tuesday. The game is sponsored by UBS and tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Colonels (6-12, 3-6 OVC) lost all four games on the road, but have won three straight at home.
The Lady Govs (10-10, 6-3 OVC) are riding a two game winning streak into McBrayer Arena.
APSU won the first meeting between the two teams this season, in Clarksville, Tenn., by a score of 70-66. Eastern Kentucky leads the all-time series 42-25 and has won four of the last five. The Lady Colonels are 23-6 against the Lady Govs in Richmond.
In the first meeting, Eastern trailed Austin Peay by 21 points at halftime but used a 19-2 run to start the second half to close the gap to four before falling. Freshman Kayla Drake led the Lady Colonels with 20 points. Colette Cole scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds for EKU. Nadia Mossong contributed 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds. The Lady Colonels held a 39-36 edge on the boards.
In its last game, EKU shot 29 percent in a 63-46 loss at Morehead State on Saturday. The Lady Colonels were led by Ilona Muszak’s 18 points. Nadia Mossong finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for EKU.
Eastern shot 21.7 percent in the first half and finished 15-for-52 from the field and 6-of-25 from three-point range. After making 35.7 percent of its first half shots, Morehead State shot 60 percent in the second half.
In her first four games back from a hand injury that sidelined her for six games, Muszak has averaged 11.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists. She scored a career-high 12 points against Southeast Missouri, grabbed a career-best nine rebounds against SIU Edwardsville and then set a new career-high with 18 points against Morehead State.
The Lady Govs are coming off of home wins over Tennessee Tech (83-81 OT) and Jacksonville State (82-57). APSU is 3-8 on the road this season.
Senior forward April Thomas leads the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). Ashley Herring, a sophomore, is the team’s second leading scorer at 11.5 points per game. Nicole Jamen (11.3 ppg) and Whitney Hanley (10.2 ppg) give APSU two more players averaging 10 or more points per game.
Hanley, a freshman from Mt. Washington, Ky., earned OVC Freshman of the Week honors on Monday. She averaged 19 points and six rebounds in Austin Peay’s two wins last week.
