BOX SCORE

MARTIN, Tenn.
– UT Martin forward Kendyl Wilson scored a goal less than two minutes into the game and then added another in the 35th minute to lead the Skyhawks to a 2-0 win over the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team Friday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.

The Colonels (4-9-2, 1-2-2 OVC) controlled the game by outshooting UT Martin (7-5-0, 4-1-0 OVC), 17-12; however, the Skyhawks capitalized on their scoring opportunities and came away with an important conference win.

“If the name of the game was “time in possession,” we would have won,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “But unfortunately that’s not the game. UT Martin took advantage of their opportunities and they deserved to win.”

Just a minute and a half in to the game, Wilson took a pass from Kelly Ann Hutchinson, drew EKU keeper Stephanie Lynch away from the goal and scored on a hook shot from the left side.

Thirty-four minutes later, Wilson scored again from the right side of the goal, this one off an assist from Kristen Nichols.

Lynch, in her first start since a head injury suffered last Friday at Morehead State, played all 90 minutes in goal for the Colonels and recorded four saves.

Junior midfielder Carly Muller led EKU with three shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Reed and freshman forward Deja Tennon came off the bench to record two shots on goal apiece.

“We’re giving up goals and not scoring any, and we’re not going to win any games that way,” Basalyga said.

The road does not get any easier for EKU as the Colonels now have to face Murray State (5-6-1, 3-1-0 OVC) on the road on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
