RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team plays its fourth game of the week Saturday night against FIU. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
A win over FIU would push Eastern Kentucky’s record to 5-1 for the first time since 2006-07. That was the last time EKU advanced to the NCAA tournament. Eastern Kentucky leads the Ohio Valley Conference in three-pointers made per game (10.8) and three-point shooting (42.5 percent). Senior
Josh Taylor (14 three-pointers, 45.2 percent) and junior
Justin Stommes (11 threes, 44 percent) are the Colonels’ top long-range threats.
FIU, out of the Sun Belt Conference, is 2-5 this year after an 84-71 loss to OVC rival Murray State Monday night. Forward Marvin Roberts leads the team in scoring (15.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg). However, Roberts was held to two points while missing all 10 field goal attempts against Murray State. The Panthers are 0-3 in road games, but two of the losses have come to North Carolina and Tulsa.
FIU is coached by former NBA great Isiah Thomas.
The Panthers lead the all-time series by a count of 2-1 which includes a 57-54 win in last year’s season opener. FIU shot 53.3 percent (8-of-25) from behind the three-point line and rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to earn the win.
Following the game against FIU, Eastern Kentucky tips off OVC action on Thursday, Dec. 3 at preseason favorite Murray State.
