COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Five different Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball players posted double figures, but it wasn’t enough as the Colonels fell to host Maryland Saturday afternoon, 83-72. This was just the second ever meeting between the two programs.
Junior
Justin Stommes paced EKU (7-3) with 16 points, a career-high seven rebounds and five assists. Fellow junior
Spencer Perrin chipped in with a season-high 14 points, seven boards and six assists. The Colonels connected on 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) of their three-point attempts, including four each from Stommes and senior
Josh Taylor.
For Maryland (6-3), guard Greivis Vasquez came off the bench to post a game-high 20 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Landon Milbourne added 19 points and nine rebounds.
The host Terrapins quickly built a 16-point edge midway through the first half, 24-8. However, the Colonel defense stiffened and held Maryland without a field goal for the next 7:30 allowing EKU to get right back in the game.
Stommes’ third trifecta of the half cut the deficit to two points, 30-28. Back-to-back buckets by senior
Papa Oppong helped Eastern close the gap to one point, 33-32, with 1:56 showing on the clock. Maryland then ran off seven straight points to take a 40-32 lead into halftime.
The second half opened just like the first as Maryland quickly stretched its lead back to 13 points, 45-32. Eastern responded with a 13-2 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Oppong and Taylor, to get back within two points, 47-45.
The Colonels finally leveled the score following two free throws from sophomore
Joshua Jones with 8:22 left to make the score, 60-all. It marked the first tie since the opening tip of the game. Maryland never relinquished the lead, though, as back-to-back three-pointers from Vasquez gave the Terps some cushion at 68-62.
Eastern Kentucky clawed within four points three more times in the final six minutes, but would get no closer.
The only other meeting between EKU and Maryland took place on Dec. 5, 1973.
The Colonels are back in action next Saturday, Dec. 19 at Ohio. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
