ATLANTA, Ga. – Eastern Kentucky beat Georgetown University twice on Sunday to earn a third place finish at the Georgia State Tournament. Senior
Kalyn Fox hit a three-run home run in the final inning of the first game to lead the Colonels (3-5) to a 4-2 win. In the consolation game, Fox pitched the final three innings to earn the win in a 3-2 EKU victory.
In the first game, the Hoyas (1-8) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run by Kristi Preuss. With two outs and two on in the top of the seventh, Fox hit her first home run since her freshman season, and her third career dinger, to push the Colonels back in front.
Stacye Toups (2-3) retired the side in order, including striking out the final two batters, in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Toups pitched the final one and two-thirds innings to earn the win. Freshman
Brittany Mockbee started and allowed two earned runs in five and one-thirds innings. She struck out six and walked one.
In the consolation game, Georgetown scored a run in the fourth and another in the sixth, on solo home runs by Mackensey Carter and Samantha Peters, to take a 2-0 lead. Eastern Kentucky scored three runs on two Hoya errors in the bottom of the sixth.
Fox (1-0), who had come on to pitch in the fifth, retired Georgetown in order in the top of the seventh to earn her first win of the season.
Junior
Jena Handley went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Eastern. Carter finished 3-for-3 for Georgetown.
The Colonels will play their first home games of the season on Saturday when they host the EKU Invitational. Eastern will play Cleveland State at 1 p.m., and Indiana State at 3 p.m.
