COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Four Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball players finished in double figures as the Colonels held off host Tennessee Tech Thursday night in the Eblen Center, 80-73. EKU (14-9, 7-5 OVC) has now won three straight games and completed the season sweep over the Golden Eagles (11-11, 5-7).
Senior
Mike Rose paced Eastern with 27 points, marking the fourth straight game he has reached the 20-point plateau. The guard climbed up to fourth on the EKU all-time scoring list with 1,619 points, passing Arlando Johnson (1991-95). Rose netted 6-of-8 (75 percent) three-point attempts and moved up to eighth spot on the OVC top-10 career three-pointers list with 248 trifectas.
Freshman
Jorge Camacho came off the bench to equal a personal high with 15 points and led the Colonels with seven boards. Meanwhile, junior
Josh Taylor and freshman
Joshua Jones each tallied 12 points.
Tennessee Tech’s Kevin Murphy finished with a team-high 21 points thanks to draining 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) three-pointers.
The Golden Eagles quickly jumped out to an early 14-8 lead, but the Colonels responded with a 21-5 run and would never trail the rest of the game. Rose hit three long-range shots during the run, including the capper to give Eastern Kentucky a 29-19 advantage.
EKU made nine three-pointers in the opening half and took a 43-32 lead into intermission.
Tennessee Tech cut the deficit to six points early in the second stanza before back-to-back three-pointers from Rose and Taylor pushed the lead back up to double figures. A Jones lay-up with 12:14 remaining then gave Eastern Kentucky its largest lead of the game, 55-40.
Eastern missed 11 free throws in the second half, allowing Tennessee Tech to creep back to within three points in the final minute, but four straight free throws from Camacho and Rose sealed the victory.
The Colonels made 12-of-24 (50 percent) three-pointers on the evening, equaling their best three-point shooting effort of the season.
Eastern Kentucky concludes its two-game road swing Saturday, Feb. 7, at Jacksonville State. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
