Softball Beats Morehead State 6-4

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
A three-run triple by sophomore Ashley Dollins in the fifth inning turned a one-run deficit into a two-run lead as the Eastern Kentucky University softball team beat Morehead State today in Morehead, Ky. The Colonels (12-16, 3-5 OVC) win the season series. The two squads split a doubleheader earlier in the season in Richmond. 

The Eagles (19-13, 3-6 OVC) fall a half game behind EKU in the conference standings.

Morehead State’s Rebecca Butler got the scoring going with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. Eastern Kentucky tied the score in the top of the third on an RBI single by Shyenne Hussey before the Eagles went back on top in the bottom of the inning on another run scoring hit by Butler.

MSU stretched its lead to 4-1 on a bases loaded two-run single by Samantha Sparks in the bottom of the fourth inning.

A big fifth inning got the Colonels back in the game. With the bases loaded and no outs Jena Handley singled to left field to drive in one runner. Two batters later, Pam Webber made it a 4-3 game with an RBI single up the middle that kept the bases loaded. With one swing of the bat, Dollins gave EKU the lead when she cleared the bases with a triple to right field to put the visitors on top 6-4.

Morehead State had runners at second and third with one out in the seventh, but failed to score.

Chelsea Butler (4-1) started and pitched the first five innings for EKU. She left the game with no outs in the sixth and then returned with one out in the seventh. In all, she allowed three earned runs on eight hits. The senior walked two and struck out a pair. Alex Gjevre (13-7) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in four and one-third innings.

Handley finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Eastern. Butler went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Morehead State.

The Colonels will play a three-game series against Austin Peay beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game in Clarksville, Tenn., is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
