RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s softball team lost both games of a conference doubleheader to Jacksonville State today at Gertrude Hood Field. The Colonels (14-19, 5-8 OVC) lost the first game 17-0 in five innings. The Gamecocks (26-9, 11-1 OVC) won the second game by a score of 9-1 in five innings.
In the first game, JSU jumped out quick with five runs in the first inning. After a lead-off single, Nikki Prier hit a two-run home run over the right-center field fence. Moments later, with one out and two on, Allison Svoboda made it a 5-0 game with a three-run shot down the left field line.
The Gamecocks stretched their lead to 7-0 with a pair of runs in the second on an RBI single by Prier and a run scoring ground out by Courtney Underwood. Another RBI single by Prier in the third gave Jacksonville State an 8-0 lead.
JSU more than doubled its lead with nine runs in the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam by Svoboda, her second home run of the game. The game ended in the fifth by the run rule.
Karla Pittman (8-1) picked up the five inning shutout for Jacksonville State, allowing just two hits, one walk and striking out four. Prier finished the first game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Svoboda had only two hits, but they were both home runs and drove in a combined seven runs.
Diane Gallagher and
Pam Webber each had one hit for the Colonels.
In the second game, JSU began the scoring in the top of the third. Prier doubled to right-center to drive in the game’s first run. Prier drove in two more in the fourth inning with another double. Underwood drove in run to make it 4-0 in the fourth.
Shyenne Hussey’s solo home run in the bottom half of the fourth got the Colonels on the board. However, the Gamecocks added five more in the fifth to take an eight-run lead. Meredith Sellers capped the big inning with a two-run double to left center.
The game ended after EKU failed to score in the bottom of the fifth.
Prier finished the second game 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Svoboda went 0-for-3 in game two. Ashley Eliasson (11-4) allowed one run on three hits while striking out six over five innings.
Hussey went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI for Eastern Kentucky.
The Colonels will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Middle Tennessee State for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., at Gertrude Hood Field.
