RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will play host to Austin Peay on Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at McBrayer Arena. The Lady Colonels (6-6, 3-0 OVC) are in the middle of a streak of four conference games in eight days.
The game will air live in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.
This is the 69th meeting between Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay (3-11, 2-1 OVC). EKU leads the all-time series 42-26, and is 23-7 against the Lady Govs in Richmond.
In its last game, Eastern shot 46.7 percent from the field and made 19-of-25 attempts from the free throw line in a 64-56 home court win over Tennessee State on Saturday.
Alex Jones led the Lady Colonels with 14 points and nine rebounds. She also had four steals, two blocks and an assist. Junior
Talisha Davis scored 12 points and dished out four assists for the Lady Colonels. Freshman
Michaelea Kleist added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Colonels have held six of their last seven opponents to 60 points or less.
Eastern Kentucky is 3-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season. The program has not won four straight conference games to start the season since going 6-0 to start the 2002-03 conference slate.
Austin Peay is the defending OVC tournament champions, but the Lady Govs have gotten off to a slow start to the 2009-10 season, due in large part to a tough schedule. Losses have come to No. 24 Middle Tennessee, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 19 Pittsburgh and No. 13 Xavier.
APSU is 3-11 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Lady Govs beat Southeast Missouri (76-63) and Eastern Illinois (65-55) at home in December to begin OVC action 2-0. However, Morehead State dispatched Austin Peay (79-56) on Saturday.
Four starters and a total of 10 letter winners returned from last year’s championship team. Junior guard/forward Ashley Herring leads the team with an average of 12 points per game. Senior forward Nicole Jamen is second in scoring (9.4 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg). Sophomore post Jasmine Rayner averages nine points and 6.1 rebounds per game. All three shoot better than 41 percent from the field.
Herring led the Lady Govs with 13 points against Morehead State on Saturday. Jamen posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. APSU shot 18.8 percent from the three-point line and turned the ball over 19 times with just three assists.
