NASHVILLE, Tenn
. – Junior Justin Stommes and sophomore Joshua Jones combined for 35 points as the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team defeated Tennessee State Sunday evening, 75-58. With the win, the Colonels (15-8, 7-4 OVC) earned their first season sweep over the Tigers (4-15, 1-10) since the 2002-03 campaign.

Stommes netted 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) three-pointers for a team-high 19 points to go along with five assists. Jones finished with a season-high 16 points for the second straight game. EKU shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43) from the floor to improve to 10-0 when shooting at least 50 percent from the field.

For Tennessee State, Jacquan Nobles tallied 20 points thanks to hitting 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) three-pointers. Robert Covington and Tashan Fredrick combined for 23 points and 16 rebounds.

The first half featured five ties and 12 lead changes. However, the Colonels used three-pointers from Stommes and Jones in the final 75 seconds to grab a 32-27 lead at halftime.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Stommes then gave Eastern its first double-digit lead of the contest, 46-34. Stommes’ fifth trifecta with 11:26 left extended the Colonel advantage to 16 points, 54-38.

Tennessee State would not go away and responded with an 11-2 spurt to close the gap to seven points, 56-49. Three different Tigers hit three-pointers during that stretch to bring the crowd back into the game.

Jones singlehandedly ended the run by converting a traditional three-point play and following up with another lay-in to give Eastern Kentucky some breathing room at 61-49. A rare Robin Mestdagh three-pointer with 3:44 remaining kept the Colonels ahead by 12 points, 64-52, and ended any thoughts of a TSU comeback.

Eastern Kentucky was extremely efficient in the second half, scoring 43 points on 72.2 percent (13-of-18) shooting from the field. For the game, the Colonels committed just five turnovers, their second lowest total of the year.

The Colonels now return home to host Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Feb. 4. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m.
