Colonels Extend Win Streak To Three, Shut Out Murray State

Eastern Kentucky stretched its winning streak to three straight after shutting out Murray State on Saturday at McBrayer Arena. The Colonels won by scores of 27-25, 25-18 and 25-22.

Three players recorded 10 or more kills for EKU (6-11, 5-3 OVC) led by Autumn Harms. The senior totaled a match-best 14 kills and posted a .478 attack percentage. Freshman Ashley Edmond contributed 13 kills, seven digs and a block assist. Senior Lauren Snyder had 11 kills, nine digs and three aces.

Logan Su led Murray State (7-12, 3-5 OVC) with 11 kills and three total blocks.

As a team, Eastern totaled 54 kills compared to just 32 for the visitors. The Colonels out-hit the Racers .209 to .159. EKU finished with 17 more digs and 21 more attacks than MSU.

Back-to-back kills by Harms gave Eastern Kentucky an 8-2 lead early in the first set. The Racers got back in the game and took a 16-15 lead on a kill by Sara Hayden. Three straight EKU errors extended the MSU lead to 21-18. Three straight kills by Hannah Groudle, Amanda Fago and Edmond turned a one-point deficit into a one-point lead and gave the Colonels set point, 24-23. The two teams exchanged kills four times leaving Eastern in front by one 26-25. Robyn Hench scored a kill on the next series to give the set to the Colonels.

EKU built an early lead in the second set as well, this time the Colonels kept the Racers at bay. A kill by Edmond put the home squad in front by six, 12-6. Another kill by Edmond made it 21-14. Edmond’s fifth kill of the set gave Eastern set-point at 24-15. Hench ended the set with a kill again, 25-18, and put the Colonels out in front 2-0.

A 6-0 run in the third set gave control to Eastern. Back-to-back aces by Snyder capped the run and gave the Colonels a 14-6 advantage. EKU went out in front by 10, 20-10, on a kill by Harms before the Racers used a 9-2 run to get back in the game. Su’s kill closed the margin to three, 22-19. An ace by Jade Guo made it a two-point game, 23-21, but that is as close as Murray State would get. Harms scored the final two Colonel points. Her second kill closed out the set, 25-22, and the match.

The Colonels will play their next four matches on the road beginning at Tennessee State on Friday. The match in Nashville is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
