Lady Colonels Fall To Miami (Ohio)

Eastern Kentucky lost 74-59 to Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday night at McBrayer Arena. After shooting 55 percent in their season opener, the Lady Colonels (1-1) shot 31 percent against the RedHawks (1-1).

Eastern freshman Marie Carpenter, who scored 14 points in her collegiate debut, finished with 16 against Miami (Ohio). Sophomore Alex Jones had 18 points and five steals.

Kirsten Olowinski led the RedHawks with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Courtney Osborn also had a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 12 assists.

Miami (Ohio) shot 55 percent in the first half as the visitors built a 16-point lead at the break. The RedHawks finished the game having made 47 percent of their shots and out-rebounded EKU 53-29.

In addition to shooting 55 percent from the field in their season opener, the Lady Colonels made 56 percent of their shots from behind the three-point arc. On Wednesday, Eastern connected on just 4-of-22 from deep for 18.2 percent.

The RedHawks connected on six of their first seven shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, on their way to an early 14-6 lead. Jones scored Eastern’s first six points.

A pair of free throws by Brittany Coles got EKU within seven, 20-13, with 12:20 remaining in the opening half, but Miami (Ohio) went on a 12-3 run to build a 16-point advantage. Olowinski scored six of the 12 points. Her lay-up at the 8:19 mark capped the run and gave the visitors a 32-16 advantage.

Trailing by 13 with less than a minute before intermission, the Lady Colonels had a chance to make it a 10-point game, but Coles missed on a three-pointer and Courtney Osborn converted a trey on the other end for a 43-27 RedHawk lead at the break.

Miami (Ohio) shot 54.5 percent in the first half from the field and made 4-of-10 three-point attempts. Eastern Kentucky shot 30 percent from the field and made only 1-of-13 three-point tries.

The RedHawks scored the first basket of the second half to go on top by 18. The lead would never grow larger than 19, but the Lady Colonels never got any closer than 13 points the rest of the game.

The Lady Colonels will take to the road for the first time this season for their next two games. EKU will travel to south Florida for a pair of games. Eastern faces Florida International in Miami on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The road trip ends with a game against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton on Monday.
