RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will host Brewton-Parker College on Saturday. The game at McBrayer arena is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Through Monday’s games, Eastern’s
Alex Jones leads the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding (9.5 rpg) and is second in scoring (16.3 ppg).
Reese Bass is third in the conference with an average of 4.0 assists per game.
In its last game, EKU led by three with 1:42 left in the game before Florida Atlantic scored 10 unanswered to pull out a 60-57 victory. Sophomore
Brittany Coles hit five three-pointers and finished with a career-best 24 points. Freshman
Marie Carpenter scored 11 points for EKU (1-3). Jones finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Coles also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. She set career-highs for field goals (8) and three-pointers (5). Her previous career-best for points was 18 at Morehead State last season.
The Lady Colonels shot 31 percent from the field and 27 percent from three-point range. After shooting 23 percent in the first half, FAU made 41 percent of its second half shots. The Owls out-scored Eastern 11-3 at the free throw line in the second half.
EKU turned the ball over 13 times at Florida Atlantic, which is a season-low. The Lady Colonels entered the game averaging 22 turnovers per game.
Brewton-Parker College is an NAIA school and a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference. The Lady Barons enter Saturday’s game with a 3-3 record. Just one starter returned from last season’s team that posted an 11-20 record.
BPC opened the season with a road loss to Voorhees (71-57) before winning three in a row at home over Edward Waters (84-43), Voorhees (64-57) and Pensacola (76-43). The Lady Barons have lost two straight to Faulkner (89-83) and Auburn-Montgomery (77-69). Brewton-Parker has reached the 80-point plateau twice this season, in addition to a 76-point performance. BPC is averaging 72.2 points per game, while holding its opponents to 63.3 points per contest.
The Lady Barons are shooting 44 percent from the field, but only 25 percent from three-point range. BPC has out-rebounded its opponents by seven boards per game. Lady Baron opponents are averaging 25.2 turnovers per game.
Twelve Lady Barons have appeared in all six games. Sharonta Williams leads the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game. Jayla Moon (9.3 ppg) is the only other player to average more than 5.5 points per game, but a total of nine players average 4.5 or more points per contest. Moon is the team’s top rebounder at 6.3 per game.
