Jeremy Caldwell (Specialist) came away with OVC Player of the Week honors following EKU’s 49-37 upset over No. 2 Jacksonville State Saturday night.
Harris caught four passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns against the Gamecocks. The sophomore caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from #T.J. Pryor# in the second quarter to put his team on top for good (14-10), and added a 76-yarder three minutes later to give EKU a 21-10 advantage. Both touchdowns came on third-and-long plays. The native of Chattanooga, Tenn., became the first Colonel wide receiver to post at least 200 yards receiving in seven seasons. Harris currently ranks second in the OVC and 23rd nationally in receiving yards per game (78.0).
Patrick had career highs in both tackles (nine, including seven solo) and sacks (2.5). The junior also forced a key fumble in the third quarter that was returned for a touchdown by teammate
Robert Knowles to put EKU ahead by 18 points (35-17). The native of Dayton, Ohio was part of a defensive unit that held the Gamecocks to a season-low 31 yards rushing on 28 attempts (1.1 yards per rush).
Caldwell returned a third quarter kick-off 86 yards for a touchdown to stretch the EKU lead over Jacksonville State to 42-24. It marked the second kick-off return for a touchdown of the season for the junior, who ranks first nationally in kickoff returns (33.54 yards per return). As a defensive back, the native of Chattanooga, Tenn., added four tackles and intercepted a pass (the second of the season for the Buck Buchanan Award candidate) with three minutes remaining to seal the victory.
Eastern Kentucky’s win over Jacksonville State was the program’s first over a top five FCS opponent since the 1990 season when EKU defeated No. 1 Middle Tennessee State.
The other weekly award winners were Eastern Illinois’ Chris Wright (Co-Offensive) and Murray State’s Mike Harris (Newcomer).
The Colonels (4-5, 3-2 OVC) now look to push their winning streak to three games next Saturday, Nov. 13 at Tennessee Tech. Game time is set 2:30 p.m. ET.
