CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay shot 52.6 percent from the floor and cruised to a 78-51 victory over the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team Saturday night in the Dave Aaron Arena. The Governors (7-6, 3-0 OVC) have now won 17 of the last 18 meetings over the Colonels (5-6, 1-2) in Clarksville.
Austin Peay never trailed in the contest as the Govs scored eight straight points to build an early 16-7 lead. Back-to-back dunks from seniors
Justin Stommes and
Spencer Perrin helped EKU close the gap to four points, 22-18, but that would be as close as Eastern would get the rest of the game.
The Govs ended the first half on an 11-2 spurt to take a commanding 40-25 lead into halftime. Eastern Kentucky struggled shooting from long range in the first 20 minutes, hitting just 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from behind the arc.
The Colonels made one more push early in the second half to slice the deficit to nine points, 51-42, following a
Taylor Filipek jumper with 11:10 remaining. However, EKU would not make another shot from the floor over the next nine minutes allowing Austin Peay to pull away. The Governors went on a 25-3 run during that stretch to make the score, 76-45.
Josh Terry paced Austin Peay with a season-best 22 points on 80 percent (8-of-10) shooting from the floor. Melvin Baker added 14 points and a game-high eight boards.
Perrin paced the Colonels with 11 points, all of which came in the first half. Junior
Jaron Jones came off the bench to chip in with season highs in both points (nine) and rebounds (six).
EKU shot a season-low 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from three-point range in the setback.
The Colonels conclude their two-game OVC road swing Tuesday, Dec. 21 at Tennessee State. Tip time is set for 8:30 p.m.
