MOREHEAD, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team shot just 37 percent (21-of-57) from the field and 32 percent (7-of-22) from deep as the Colonels fell to Morehead State, 77-64, Wednesday night in Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

With the loss, EKU falls to 18-10 (10-6 OVC) while MSU improves to 19-8 (13-3 OVC).

Senior Josh Taylor connected on four three-pointers and tallied a season-high 21 points while senior Dayvon Ellis came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points. Taylor and Ellis were the only Colonels to reach double figures in scoring on the night.

Two of EKU’s top scorers, junior Justin Stommes and senior Papa Oppong, combined to score just four points.

Maze Stalloworth pumped in 20 points to lead four Eagles in double figures. Kenneth Faried record another double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Steve Peterson scored 15 and Demonte Harper scored 11.

EKU was out rebounded on the night, 45-28.

MSU jumped out to a 9-2 lead less than two minutes in thanks to five points and five boards from Faried. After a thunderous dunk in the lane by Taylor capped a 6-2 Colonel run and brought EKU to within three, the Eagles scored 10 unanswered to go ahead 21-8 with 10:21 remaining in the half.

The Colonels clawed back, though, as a three-point play by junior Josh Daniel with 6:12 showing on the clock highlighted a 7-0 run and made it 28-20. However, MSU knocked down three three-pointers over the next three minutes to help the Eagles take a convincing 39-20 lead.

A three by Les Simmons as time expired sent MSU into the locker room at halftime up by 20, 45-25.

EKU shot just 32 percent (9-of-28) from the field and 20 percent (2-of-10) from deep and were out rebounded 27-9 in the first half.

The Colonels trailed by 20 or more for much of the second half before an 11-4 run to end the game brought them to within 13.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when they host Big South opponent Winthrop in a game resulting from the ESPN Bracket Buster pool. Tip time for that game is 7 p.m.
