RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team hopes to return to the win column Saturday night in a non-conference game against Winthrop. The game, presented by the Richmond Register, will tip off in McBrayer Arena at 7 p.m.
Eastern Kentucky (18-10, 10-6 OVC) needs one more home win to equal the McBrayer Arena single-season record of 14 wins. The Colonels are 13-1 at home this season while outscoring the opposition by an average of 12 points. EKU tallied 14 home wins in the 1990-91 (14-0) and 1978-79 (14-1) seasons.
This is the fifth season Eastern Kentucky has participated in the ESPN BracketBusters series. This will be the second time the Colonels have faced a Big South opponent in the BracketBusters (UNC Asheville – 2006). Eastern is 2-2 all-time in the BracketBusters.
Winthrop (15-10, 11-4 BSC) has won seven straight games to move into second place in the Big South standings. The Eagles rank second in the Big South in scoring defense (61.0 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (39.5 percent). Guard Reggie Middleton leads Winthrop in scoring (9.5 ppg) while center Andy Buechert paces the squad in rebounding (6.8 rpg).
The Colonels are 0-2 all-time against Winthrop. The two teams played a home-and-home series in 2002 and 2003. In five seasons under head coach
Jeff Neubauer, EKU is 2-1 against teams in the Big South Conference.
Following the Winthrop game, Eastern Kentucky winds down the regular season with a pair of home OVC games next weekend.
