ELON, N.C. –
Eastern Kentucky beat Elon 3-2 on Wednesday in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. The Colonels (4-13) had to hold off a late rally by the Phoenix (11-3) to earn their third win in the past two days. Elon won the first game 7-1.

Eastern led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game. Junior Stacye Toups retired two of the first three batters before Elon generated back-to-back singles. The second hit plated a run and brought the Phoenix to within 3-2 with the tying run at third and the winning run at first. However, Toups got a ground ball to end the game.

A sacrifice fly by Nikki Bruce in the second inning got Eastern Kentucky on the board. Raquel Howes made it 2-0 in the third with an RBI single to center. Howes led off the sixth inning with her second home run of the season, which would prove to be the game winning run. Elon closed the gap to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman Kristin Perry (3-3) started for EKU and picked up her third win in the past two days. She tossed five and one-third innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out six. Howes finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

In the first game, the Phoenix scored all seven runs in the first two innings. A sacrifice fly by Diane Gallagher in the top of the second cut the deficit to 4-1, but that is as close as the visitors would get. Toups came on in relief in the second inning and held Elon scoreless over five innings. Christina Datko went 2-for-3 for EKU.

The Colonels will begin play at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday. EKU will face Hartford at 4 p.m. and North Carolina State at 6 p.m.
