ROCK HILL, S.C. – Eastern Kentucky split a pair of games on Saturday at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational. The Colonels fell to Towson 9-2 before beating Winston-Salem State by a score of 8-0. Freshman
Kristin Perry earned her fist collegiate complete game shutout in the win over WSSU, allowing two hits and striking out 10.
EKU (5-15) jumped out quick on Winston-Salem (2-6). Freshman
Raquel Howes drove in one with a ground out.
Jena Handley followed with an RBI double to left center for a 2-0 Colonel lead after one.
Eastern Kentucky pulled away in the middle of the game. Eastern pushed across two more in the fourth on an RBI double by
DeAnn Horswill and a run scoring single by
Melissa Costa. The Colonels extended their lead to 7-0 with three runs in the fifth. Horswill’s second home run of the season in the seventh capped the scoring.
Ashley Dollins and Horswill each finished with two hits for EKU. Perry improved to 4-4 this season.
An RBI single by Dollins in the first inning against Towson (10-3) staked Eastern to an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers took control of the game in the third when Joyce Delp launched a three-run home run to right center to cap a four-run inning. Towson added three more over the next two innings.
A run scoring single by
Samm Daniels in the sixth cut the deficit to 7-2, but Eastern wouldn’t get any closer. Dollins went 4-for-4 against Towson.
The Colonels will conclude the Winthrop/adidas Invitational on Sunday against South Carolina-Upstate. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
