MARTIN, Tenn. –
Eastern Kentucky opened the Ohio Valley Conference softball schedule with a pair of losses today to Tennessee-Martin on the road. The Skyhawks (20-3, 2-0 OVC) won the first game 4-2 and edged the Colonels (5-19, 0-2 OVC) 1-0 in the second game.

Game one got off to a good start for EKU. A single to center field by Jena Handley in the first inning scored Diane Gallagher from second base to stake the Colonels to an early 1-0 lead. However, the Skyhawks took advantage of three Eastern errors while scoring four runs in the bottom of the first.

Neither team scored again until Eastern Kentucky cut the deficit to two on an RBI by Melissa Costa in the seventh.

Four Colonels had one hit each to account for EKU’s four hits. Kate Vanderham finished 2-for-3 for UTM. Paij Lintz improved to 8-1 this season after tossing seven innings for the Skyhawks. She allowed two hits and struck out two.

In the second game, Kate Vanderham drove in the only run of the game with a double to left center in the fourth, and then took care of everything else herself in the circle. Vanderham (6-1) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout. She walked two and struck out seven.

EKU freshman Kristin Perry (4-6) was nearly as good, allowing one run on four hits to go along with three strikeouts.

The Colonels and Skyhawks will close out their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
