RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky won an Ohio Valley Conference weekend series by beating Southeast Missouri State 7-2 on Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Colonels took two of three in the series.

EKU (7-20, 2-3 OVC) jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first. After the lead-off hitter was retired, seven straight Colonels reached base before the second out. With the bases loaded, Melissa Costa singled to left to plate the first run. With the bases still loaded, back-to-back walks to Nikki Bruce and DeAnn Horswill forced in two more runs. Christina Datko’s single to left capped the scoring and put the home squad on top 4-0.

Nicole Troncoso’s RBI single through the left side in the top of the second got the Redhawks (10-16, 1-4 OVC) on the board and cut the Eastern lead to 4-1.

Eastern Kentucky took advantage of a walk, two hit batters and a throwing error to add three runs in the bottom of the second.

Stacye Toups (2-3) relieved Kristin Perry in the second and pitched six innings. She allowed one run on six hits and struck out three. Diane Gallagher went 2-for-4 at the plate for EKU. Raquel Howes was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Bruce and Horswill each had two RBIs.

Shelby Stein and Elise Sperakos each had two hits for SEMO. Stein also had an RBI.

The Colonels will continue Ohio Valley Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to face rival Morehead State. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
