MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State exchanged a pair of shutouts in an Ohio Valley Conference softball doubleheader split on Tuesday. After falling in the first game 2-0, EKU came back to shutout the Eagles 5-0 in game two of the midweek showdown.

An RBI single in the top of the second by Samm Daniels scored Nikki Bruce and put the Colonels (8-21, 3-4 OVC) on top 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader. EKU took advantage of a Morehead State (12-13, 5-2 OVC) throwing error in the top of the fourth, platting two runs and extending its lead to 3-0.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, Eastern’s DeAnn Horswill was hit by a pitch. Raquel Howes scored to put the visitors on top 4-0. An RBI single in the sixth by Howes made it a 5-0 game.

Morehead State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Eastern’s Stacye Toups struck out Ashley Archer and induced Courtney Seiler into a ground ball to end the inning and the MSU threat. The Eagles got the leadoff batter on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Toups retired three straight to end the game.

Toups (3-3) struck out five and allowed six hits over seven scoreless innings. Howes, Bruce and Daniels each recorded two hits. Diane Gallagher had two stolen bases to raise her season total to 26. She entered the day ranked fifth in the nation with an average of 0.89 stolen bases per game.

In the first game, Morehead State got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, and runners at second and third, Seiler singled up the middle to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Alex Gjevre took care of everything else for MSU, firing a three-hit complete game shutout. She struck out six batters. EKU’s Kristin Perry was nearly as good. The freshman allowed two runs on three hits and struck out seven.

The Colonels will host a three game Ohio Valley Conference series later this week. On Friday, EKU and Tennessee State will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The series concludes with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
