RICHMOND, Ky. –
Freshman Kristin Perry tossed a complete game one-hit shutout to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 2-0 victory in the first game of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader against Murray State on Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Racers captured the second game 14-4 in five innings.

The Colonels (13-33, 7-13 OVC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by freshman Melissa Costa. That would be all EKU would need with Perry (6-13) in the circle. She allowed the lone Racer hit in the third inning and struck out seven batters.

A fielding error in the bottom of the fifth allowed Christina Datko to score to set the final score. Four different Colonels registered one hit each. Megan Belio went 1-for-3 for Murray State.

Eastern Kentucky jumped out first in the second game as well, but this time Murray State (20-26, 9-10 OVC) would respond. An RBI single by Raquel Howes got the Colonels on the board. Jena Handley’s runs scoring double pushed the lead to 2-0 after the first inning.

RBI singles by Stephanie Edwards and Taylor Wilson in the top of the second tied the score for the Racers. MSU added three runs, including an RBI double by Lauren Buch, in the top of the third to stretch its lead to 5-2.

Costa’s two-run home run in the bottom of the third brought the home team to within one, 5-4, but that is as close as the Colonels would get. The home run was the first for the freshman from Turlock, Calif.

After adding a run in the fourth, Murray State scored eight times in the fifth to put the game away. Stephanie Mattocks had a two-run single in the big inning.

Buch went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs for Murray State. Four other Racers drove in two runs each. Jena Handley finished 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI for EKU.

Eastern sophomore Diane Gallagher went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Her stolen base in the first inning broke the school record for steals in a season. Gallagher’s total of 32 surpassed Chanze Patterson’s mark of 31 set in 2006.

The Colonels will host Kentucky on Tuesday. The single game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
