RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader at home on Tuesday to Miami (Ohio) University. The Redhawks won the first game 2-0 and took the second game by a score of 6-4.
The Colonels fall to 11-25 on the season.
In game one, Miami (16-15) scored all the runs it would need in the top of the fourth. Alicia Hogl doubled to lead off the inning and scored two batters later on a single down the right field line by Shannon Tillett. An RBI single by Casey Drees later in the inning made it a 2-0 game.
Meredith Linch (5-6) tossed a complete game three-hitter for Miami. She walked one and struck out six. EKU’s
Stacye Toups (6-4) allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three.
In game two, the two teams exchanged a pair of grand slams to get the game started. With the bases loaded in the top of the first, Sarah Billstrom sent one over the left field fence for a 4-0 Redhawk lead. In the bottom of the second, EKU’s
Cassi Gibson stepped to the plate with the bases juiced and sent one sailing down the left field line to tie the game.
The grand slam was Gibson’s first career home run.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth. Billstrom came to the plate again with the bases loaded, this time she drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run. Russette’s RBI single gave Miami a two-run cushion. Eastern brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but could not score.
Billstrom finished 2-for-3 with a run and five RBIs. Meghan Mawn went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Redhawks. Gibson’s grand slam was her only hit in three at bats.
Raquel Howes went 2-for-4 for EKU.
Eastern freshman
Kristin Perry (4-11) struck out eight batters in six innings, but she allowed six earned runs on eight hits and walked eight batters.
After four non-conference games in two days, the Colonels will step back into Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend at Eastern Illinois. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m., and Sunday’s single game is set for a 1 p.m. ET start.
