RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will face tough competition on the road this weekend as the Colonels (1-1-0) travel to play Kansas on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and SIU Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

EKU opened the season with a 4-1 loss at Louisville last Friday but recovered to shut out Xavier, 1-0, in its home opener just two days later. It was a big weekend for the veterans of the team as senior Courtney Nestor scored her first career goal in the loss to Louisville, and senior Carly Muller scored the game-winner against Xavier off a pass from senior Alex Raich.

This will be the first-ever meeting between EKU and Kansas, or EKU and any Big 12 team for that matter. Friday night’s game is the season opener for the Jayhawks, who were picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 this season. The Jayhawks were an impressive 12-8-2 and an ever more impressive 7-2 at home in 2009. They return their top scorer from last year, Emily Cressy (12 goals, three assists).

Conversely, EKU is well-acquainted with SIU Edwardsville. The two teams have played the last two seasons, both at EKU Soccer Field and both ending in a 1-0 Colonel victory. The Cougars are 1-0-0 this year following a season-opening 1-0 win over South Dakota at home on Friday night. Brittany Bodziak (three goals in 2009) is the Cougars’ top returning scorer.

The Colonels are set to return home after this weekend and play two games at home over Labor Day weekend.
