Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky won the first set against visiting Jacksonville State, but the Gamecocks (6-7, 1-1 OVC) won the next three to take a 3-1 victory over the Colonels (2-9, 1-1 OVC). Set scores were 28-30, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-19.

JSU held a 63-49 advantage in kills, out-hit Eastern .269 to .135 and totaled seven more blocks. Four Gamecocks recorded 13 or more kills led by Jen Meyer’s 14. Meyer hit .367 with two aces and four total blocks. Caitlin Vorbeck had seven total blocks to go along with her 13 kills.

Freshman Ashley Edmond led EKU with a match-best 15 kills. Senior Lauren Snyder added 10. Senior #Abby O’Connor# posted her second 30-plus dig performance of the season, finishing with 31.

The score in the first set was tied 13 times. A kill by Kara Slater gave JSU set-point at 24-21, but Eastern Kentucky didn’t fold. The Colonels scored the next four points to go on top 25-24. EKU had set-point three more times before finally finishing off Jacksonville State 30-28 on a kill by Autumn Harms followed by a JSU error.

EKU trailed by one, 21-20, late in the second set before the Gamecocks scored three of the next four points to reach set-point, 24-21. A kill by Snyder kept the Colonels alive, but an attack error on the next series allowed JSU to tie the score 1-1.

The first half of the third set was much like the first two, back and forth between the two teams. However, after a kill by Harms gave Eastern Kentucky an 11-10 advantage, the Gamecocks used an 11-1 run to take control of the set, and the match. Slater had three kills during the run. Back-to-back kills by Alyx Schulte finished off the set 25-16 in favor of JSU.

A kill by Harms followed by a Gamecock attack error allowed Eastern to tie the score 17-17 in the fourth set, but the Colonels couldn’t take the lead. Jacksonville State scored the next five points and won the set, and the match, on back-to-back EKU attack errors.

After opening conference play with two home matches, the Colonels will play their next three on the road, beginning on Friday at Southeast Missouri State. The match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
