EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Host SIU Edwardsville used a goal by Meagan Iffrig in the eighth minute of overtime to defeat the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium.
Following a scoreless regulation in which EKU (6-8-2, 4-2-1 OVC) outshot SIUE (5-7-1, 3-3-0 OVC), 15-5, Iffrig received a pass from Devon Thomas eight minutes into sudden-death overtime and fired a left-footed shot to the far post from 10 yards out that ended the game.
The Colonels attempted eight shots on the goal in the game, compared to the Cougars’ three.
“If the name of the game was ‘time in possession’ we would have won, but it’s obviously not,” head coach
Lindsay Basalyga said. “It’s disappointing to do everything tactically, but not have the composure to finish in the final third. Our backs are carrying a lot of pressure to keep the ball out of the net, and that pressure has to be equally shared by our attacking players to score goals.”
Sophomore
Lauren Fant led all players with four shots, while she and freshman
Kaylynn Brown both attempted two shots on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Annie Wickett played all 98 minutes in goal and made two saves, while senior
Stephanie Murray, junior
Deja Tennon, sophomore #Emily D’Italia
and freshman Paige Larkin# all went the distance on an EKU backline that allowed just one goal in two conference games this weekend.
EKU, which entered Sunday’s game in second place in the OVC standings, will play a non-conference game at Longwood next weekend before closing out the regular season by hosting Austin Peay and Murray State in the last weekend of October.
