EKU Volleyball Set For OVC Tournament

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
The Eastern Kentucky volleyball team will begin play at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament against Southeast Missouri State on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Morehead, Ky.

EKU enters the postseason tournament as the No. 5 seed.  The Redhawks (13-18, 11-9 OVC) are the fourth seed.  The winner of Thursday’s match will play No. 1 seed Morehead State on Friday, at 7 p.m., in the semifinals.

Eastern concluded its season with a 14-17 record and a 9-11 mark against conference teams.  The Colonels finished in a three-way tie for fifth place.  EKU lost its final three matches of the regular season and four of its last five.

SEMO won both meetings with the Colonels this season by identical 3-1 scores.

Sophomore Ashley Edmond has led EKU this season.  She has a team-best 394 kills to go along with 289 digs and 49 blocks.  She ranks fifth in OVC with an average of 3.31 kills per set and seventh in the league with an average of 3.61 points per set.

A trio of freshmen have been key contributors throughout the season.  Hannah Burkle is second on the team with 335 kills and leads the Colonels with 103 blocks.  She finished the season ranked eighth in the OVC with an average of 0.87 blocks and 10th with 3.50 points per set.  However, Burkle was injured last week and missed the final match of the season.

Abbey Cvelbar has served as the team’s primary setter all season.  She concluded her first season ranked ninth in the conference with an average of 8.71 assists per set.  She also recorded enough attacks at the setter position to lead the OVC with a .315 attack percentage.  Cvelbar led the Colonels with 36 service ace while averaging 1.29 kills and 2.15 digs per set.

Dena Ott led Eastern and finished fifth in the OVC with an average of 4.89 digs per set.

Southeast Missouri finished the season with three wins in its final eight matches.  The Redhawks finished fourth, one game out of third and two games out of second.

Brittney Kalinoski led SEMO with 312 kills this season.  Emily Coon is the team’s top blocker with an OVC-best 135.  Julie Shives posted 8.96 assists per set and also led the team with 3.04 digs per set.

The Colonels posted a 7-3 record at home but went 7-14 away from McBrayer Arena in 2011.
