Lady Colonels Looking To Keep Streak Alive On The Road

Having won two straight games for the first time this season, the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team will go on the road to face Miami (Ohio) University on Saturday looking for its third straight.

The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

EKU and Miami (Ohio) will be meeting for the 12th time.  Eastern holds an 8-3 advantage in the series.  The Lady Colonels won the first six meetings, but the RedHawks have won three of the last five including a 76-59 victory last season in Richmond.  The two teams met for the first time during the 1972-73 season.

In their last game, the Lady Colonels (4-5) used a 19-4 run late in the second half to pull away for a 60-46 victory over Belmont on Tuesday.  EKU held the Bruins to 14 second half points.  Marie Carpenter led the Lady Colonels with 14 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals.  Alex Jones recorded her second straight double-double, finishing with 12 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

Miami (Ohio) is off to a 4-3 start to the season.  The RedHawks had won four of their last five games before falling at Duquesne on Tuesday 64-63.  Miami has wins over Marshall, UMass, Indiana and Iona.

The RedHawks out-rebounded Duquesne by 11, but were out-scored in the paint by six.  Miami shot 39 percent from the field, compared to 41 percent for Duquesne.  Miami committed six more turnovers.

Junior guard Courtney Osborn leads the team in scoring (16.7 ppg) and assists (6.0 apg).  She has made 35 percent of her shots from the field and 26 percent from three-point range.  Kirsten Olowinski, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, averages 8.7 points and a team-best 7.7 rebounds per game.  As a team, Miami is scoring 66.7 points and allowing 65.6 per game.  The RedHawks are out-rebounding their opponents by 3.3 boards per game but are committing 4.4 more turnovers per contest.

In last year’s meeting, the Lady Colonels shot 31 percent against the RedHawks.  Carpenter finished with 16 points.  Jones had 18 points and five steals.  Olowinski led the RedHawks with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 14 rebounds.  Osborn also had a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 12 assists.

Miami (Ohio) shot 55 percent in the first half as the visitors built a 16-point lead at the break.  The RedHawks finished the game having made 47 percent of their shots and out-rebounded EKU 53-29.  Eastern connected on just 4-of-22 from deep for 18 percent.
