RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team finishes the 2010-11 regular season schedule this weekend at UT Martin and Murray State. The Wazoo Sports Network is televising both games beginning with the EKU-UTM contest Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Eastern (15-13, 9-7 OVC) is locked in to the fifth or sixth seed for the upcoming OVC tournament which means the Colonels will have to win four games in four days to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament. EKU is 8-1 against teams currently below the Colonels in the league standings. One of those victories came against UT Martin on Dec. 4.
The Skyhawks (10-19, 5-11) have won three of their last four home OVC games to stay in contention for the final berth in the OVC tournament. Three of UT Martin’s five leading scorers are freshmen including forward Troy King who was named OVC Freshman of the Week this past week. King averaged 16.5 ppg in two games a week ago while netting 6-of-10 three-pointers in an 81-75 loss to Bradley on Saturday.
There is a very good chance that Eastern Kentucky and UT Martin could square off again next week in the first round of the OVC tournament in the 5-vs.-8 or 6-vs.-7 opening round game. The two teams have never met in the league tourney.
