Colonels Cap Perfect Home Record With 6-1 Win

Senior Alex Das
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s tennis team defeated Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon, 6-1, to finish the home schedule undefeated at 11-0.

After dropping the doubles point, which took two hours to decide, EKU (15-4, 3-0 OVC) responded with decisive wins in the top five singles matches to claim the team victory. Junior Emilio Piriz (No. 6) helped the Colonels sweep the singles matches with a super tie-breaker triumph over JSU’s Eric Matthieson.

“The guys used the disappointment of the doubles finish as strong incentive for their singles matches today,” EKU head coach Rob Oertel said. “I thought we had a pretty good showing in singles.”

The Colonels have now won 19 consecutive regular season league matches dating back to 2008. Also, Eastern has a 31-match home winning streak that dates back to a 6-1 loss to Minnesota in February 2009.

Eastern Kentucky is back in action on Tuesday, April 5 at Morehead State.
