CINCINNATI, Ohio – Xavier’s Ashton Green scored with just under three minutes remaining in the second overtime to give the host Musketeers a 1-0 victory over the Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team Friday evening. This marked the third overtime game of the season for the Colonels (2-6-1).
Xavier (4-3) outshot EKU, 21-6, including 8-1 in shots on goal. The Musketeers kept their perfect home record intact (4-0) and have allowed just four goals in seven games.
Eastern Kentucky freshman Annie Wickett played all 107 minutes in goal and made seven saves before allowing Green’s goal. The goal was Green’s second of the season and came from just inside the penalty box.
“Obviously it’s disappointing to lose with 2:35 left in overtime, but overall I thought we competed for the entire game,” EKU head coach
Lindsay Basalyga said. “We did a lot of great things from the 18-to-18, but weren’t dangerous enough in front of the goal.”
The Colonels have now been held scoreless in three straight games while dropping two of those contests by scores of 1-0.
“We’ve had a very tough non-conference schedule this year and although our record does not reflect it, we have learned some very valuable lessons that will certainly help us,” Basalyga said.
Eastern will take this Sunday off before opening conference play next Friday, Sept. 23 with a visit to defending OVC champion Morehead State at 7 p.m.
