Gameweek: EKU Kicks Off Conference Action Saturday at Austin Peay

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team begins its hunt for the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference title Saturday night at Austin Peay. Game time at Governors Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Eastern Kentucky (1-2) has won 20 OVC titles, more than any other conference member, including back-to-back championships in 2007 and 2008. However, the Colonels have gone just 3-4 in OVC road games over the last two seasons. One of those losses came at Austin Peay in 2009 when the Governors ran for 263 yards and forced four EKU turnovers in a 24-20 win.

This game will be Austin Peay’s (0-2) home opener. The Govs began the season with tough road games at Cincinnati and Memphis. APSU is led by junior quarterback Jake Ryan and senior running back Ryan White. Ryan tallied career highs in completions (23) and passing yards (245) last week at Memphis. White ran for 99 yards in the 2009 win over EKU.

The Colonels had won 22 straight meetings over Austin Peay, dating back to 1977, until the Govs pulled out 2009 victory. EKU responded last fall by holding Austin Peay to just 10 yards passing in a 17-3 win. Senior defensive back Jeremy Caldwell tallied a 69-yard punt return for a score and an interception last year against the Govs.
