RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team begins Ohio Valley Conference competition Friday evening at Morehead State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Colonels (2-6-1) were picked to finish sixth in the OVC this season. EKU finished fifth one year ago and earned a berth in the conference tournament for the third consecutive year. The Eastern offense will need to pick up its game as the Colonels have been held scoreless in three consecutive games.
Morehead State is 4-3-2 overall after suffering a 2-1 setback at Alabama on Sept. 18. Last season, the Eagles won their second straight OVC regular-season title after going 13-7-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the OVC. Morehead State then recorded its second conference tournament title after defeating Austin Peay in the 2010 championship match, 2-1. The Eagles have not lost an OVC contest in the past two seasons, going 12-0-4 during that span.
Each of the last three meetings between Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State has gone to extra time. The Eagles prevailed in 2010 and 2008, while the 2009 meeting ended in a 0-0 draw. EKU is 0-5-1 all-time against Morehead State dating back to the first meeting in 2005.
Following Friday’s match at Morehead State, the Colonels continue league play next weekend at Tennessee Tech (Sept. 30) and Jacksonville State (Oct. 2).
