RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will stay home this weekend as the Colonels host Marshall on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Detroit Mercy on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the friendly confines of EKU Soccer Field.
EKU (2-3-1) is fresh off a weekend in which it went 1-0-1 against a pair of Big South Teams, dismantling UNC Asheville on Friday, 4-0, before tying Gardner-Webb, 1-1, on Sunday in a game that was shortened by severe weather. Seven Colonels recorded points in Friday’s win, as four different people scored on assists from three different people. Freshman
Kaylynn Brown, meanwhile, notched her first career goal off an assist from fellow freshman
Devon Saini in Sunday’s draw. Freshman Annie Wickett was named the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday after surrendering just one goal and making seven saves in last week’s action.
Marshall comes to Richmond with a record of 1-4 following four straight losses to Virginia Commonwealth, William and Mary, Ohio and West Virginia. Angela DeSumma currently paces the Marshall offense with a pair of goals and an assist. EKU fell to Marshall, 4-0, in 2006 in the Colonels’ only previous meeting with the Thundering Herd.
The Colonels, however, are very familiar with the Titans, as this will be EKU’s fourth meeting with Detroit in the program’s six-year history. The Colonels are 3-0 all-time against the Titans, including a 2-1 road victory in 2010 in which sophomore
Lauren Fant, a Detroit native, scored the game-winning goal. Detroit enters the weekend with a record of 5-2-1, and the Titans are led offensively by Abby McCollum’s two goals and seven assists in 2011.
