CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Before a week filled with final exams, the Eastern Kentucky men’s basketball team will be tested on the road on Saturday at Chattanooga.
Tip-off in is scheduled for 7 p.m. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.
Eastern Kentucky is off to its best start in 66 years. The last time EKU started a season with more than five straight wins was in 1946-47 when the “Maroons” won their first 11 games. Eastern’s 8-0 start is the fourth best in program history. EKU’s best starts have been 12-0 (1943-44), 11-0 (1946-47) and 9-0 (1939-40).
The Colonels are the only remaining team in the Ohio Valley Conference without a loss this season. EKU is now one of only three undefeated mid-major teams in the nation.
Eastern Kentucky’s current eight game winning streak is its longest since winning 10 in a row during the 1964-65 season.
Eastern has taken full advantage of other team’s mistakes this year. Through the first seven games of the season, EKU has committed 67 fewer turnovers than its opponents and has out-scored its foes 204-100 off turnovers.
Chattanooga enters Saturday’s game with a 2-5 record and a 0-1 mark in the Southern Conference. UTC’s wins have come against Tennessee Temple and Kennesaw State.
While the Mocs have not shot well this season, they have rebounded extremely well. Chattanooga ranks 17th in the nation with a rebound margin of +10.0. UTC has made 39 percent of its shots from the field and 28 percent from three-point range.
Z. Mason, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, is the team’s top scorer (11.7 ppg) and second leading rebounder (6.9 rpg). Gee McGhee, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard, averages 10 points per game. Drazen Zlovaric, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, leads the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and contributes 9.6 points per contest.
This will be the second meeting between the two programs. The Mocs beat Eastern 68-54 in the first meeting on Dec. 30, 2009.
