COOKEVILLE, Tenn. –
A poor first half doomed the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team in a 66-51 loss at Tennessee Tech University on Saturday night.  The Lady Colonels shot 23 percent and scored only 23 points in the first half.

Alex Jones led EKU (12-13, 7-7 OVC) with 13 points.  Jala Harris recorded a game-high 17 points for the Golden Eagles (14-15, 10-5 OVC).  With the win, TTU clinched the No. 3 seed for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.

A basket by #LaRa’e Allen# with 8:51 left in the first half put Eastern on top 19-18.  However, the Lady Colonels did not hit another field goal the rest of the half.  Tech closed out the first stanza with a 17-4 run and led by 12, 35-23, at the break.  EKU made just 6-of-26 from the field for 23 percent.  The Golden Eagles shot 52 percent (14-for-27) from the field and made 3-of-6 from deep.

The Lady Colonels got within seven on a three-pointer by Carla Booth with 12:49 to go, but never got any closer.  A free throw by Raechele Gray with 11:48 left in the game made it an eight-point game, 43-35, but Tech scored eight unanswered to put the game away.  A basket by Tacarra Hayes capped the spurt and gave the Golden Eagles a 51-35 lead with 9:24 remaining.

EKU shot 32 percent (9-for-28) in the second half but just 28 percent for the game.  Eastern was 3-for-18 (17 percent) from behind the three-point arch.  Tennessee Tech shot 45 percent for the game.

The Lady Colonels will conclude their 2011-12 regular season schedule with two home games next week.  EKU will host Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., before closing out with a home game against co-OVC leader Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
