Gameday: It’s Tournament Time

RICHMOND, Ky. – It came down to the regular season finale, but the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team has punched its ticket to Nashville and the OVC tournament. EKU tips off tournament action Wednesday night against Southeast Missouri at 7 p.m. ET.

This is the 10th straight year Eastern Kentucky (16-15) has qualified for the OVC tournament. However, the Colonels have lost four straight OVC tourney games since winning the league title in 2007. As the eighth seed, EKU will have to win four games in four days to capture the conference crown.

In the first round, EKU faces fifth seeded Southeast Missouri (14-15). The two teams met just once this year, back in early January, with the Colonels pulling out a 63-59 win. Senior Joshua Jones tallied 20 points in that game, but EKU won the contest at the free throw line. The Colonels were 20-of-24 (83 percent) at the charity stripe that night while the Redhawks were just 4-of-13 (31 percent).

This is the second straight year these two teams have squared off in the OVC tournament. Southeast Missouri held EKU to a season-low 49 points in a 65-49 win last year.

If the Colonels pull out a win over Southeast Missouri, EKU would then take on fourth seeded Tennessee Tech (18-12) in the quarterfinals Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles have won four straight meetings over Eastern including a 74-67 decision just two weeks ago.

All tournament games will be played at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in downtown Nashville.
