RICHMOND, Ky. – After posting a shutout in game one, Eastern Kentucky made nine errors in an extra-inning game two loss to Murray State on Saturday. The Colonels won the first game 3-0 before falling 10-7.
Eastern entered the day with a chance to finish as high as second in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. However, with the split, coupled with other results throughout the league, EKU cannot finish higher than fifth. Spots two through six are separated by only 1.5 games.
Game one began with Eastern scoring two runs in the first inning. With one out and two on,
Melissa Costa singled up the middle to score both runners.
That’s all the Colonels needed as freshman
Leanna Pittsenbarger (15-13) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout. She walked one batter and struck out seven.
Shannon McQueen added an RBI single in the sixth for some insurance.
Diane Gallagher finished 2-for-3. Costa was 1-for-2 with two runs driven in.
Megan Glosser recorded two of the Racers’ three hits. Shelby Kosmecki (11-11) allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings. She walked five and struck out five.
After combining for one error in game one, committed by MSU, the two teams totaled 14 errors in the second game.
The Colonels (27-27, 16-12 OVC) made five errors in the first two innings and fell behind 4-0. With two on and one out in the second, EKU made three errors on a single by Glosser that allowed three runs to come home.
Eastern Kentucky didn’t fold. The Colonels took advantage of three Racer errors in the third inning to plate seven runs. Gallagher got the scoring started with an RBI double. With runners at the corners,
Raquel Howes drove in the second run when she reached on a fielding error. EKU tied the game, 4-4, when two runners scored on two MSU errors on a single by
Katie Tackett.
Christina Ciolek capped the 7-run third with an RBI single up the middle.
However, Murray State (31-19, 18-11 OVC) had an answer in the fourth. EKU committed three more errors in the inning. Alexa Becker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Casey Castile followed with an RBI double and Mandi Kellerman tied it with a single to left.
The game remained tied until MSU platted three in the top of the ninth. A sacrifice bunt by Ellyn Troup broke the tie and Sarah Anderson added a two-run double.
Nicole Heitz had a three-hit game for Eastern, finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored. Pittsenbarger (15-14) suffered the loss.
Glosser led the Racers at the plate with a 4-for-5 outing. She also scored twice. CheyAnne Gaskey (9-3) picked up the win in relief. She tossed six and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball. She allowed four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The Colonels and Racers will conclude their regular season schedules with a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
