RICHMOND, Ky. – The red-hot Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will take its unblemished record on the road for the first time this weekend as the Colonels travel to play also-undefeated Kentucky on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at UK Soccer Complex.
EKU jumped out to the first 2-0 start in program history last weekend as the Colonels defeated UNC Asheville, 2-1, on Friday and then edged Robert Morris, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday. Junior
Lauren Fant, who went the distance in both matches and scored the game-winner against Asheville, was named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, while freshman
Erika Wolfer, who recorded her first-career shutout in the win over RMU, was tabbed the OVC Goalkeeper of the Week. Freshman
Taylor Perkins came off the bench against RMU and made her first collegiate goal a memorable one, burying the game-winner from nearly 35 yards out just two minutes into overtime.
EKU’s attack over the weekend was balanced, as all three Colonel goals were scored and assisted on by different players.
Kentucky (1-0) opened the season last Friday at home, shutting out Coastal Carolina, 2-0. The Wildcats dominated that game from start to finish, outshooting the Chanticleers, 21-1.
EKU is 0-3 against Kentucky all-time; however, the Colonels nearly upset the Wildcats in Lexington last fall, leading, 1-0, for much of the game before the Wildcats scored twice in the final 10 minutes to come away with the win.
Following Kentucky, EKU will have Sunday off before returning to action next Friday at Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m.
