RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will face a pair of tough, non-conference opponents this weekend at the College of Charleston Cup in Charleston, S.C. The Colonels open competition with Kennesaw State on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before playing host College of Charleston on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
EKU (2-2-1) is fresh off a grueling stretch of games during which the Colonels lost at Kentucky and Cincinnati before battling Wright State to a 1-1 draw last Sunday. Sophomore
Kaylynn Brown scored EKU’s lone goal in that game off an assist from junior
Nikki Donnelly.
The Colonels’ rookie goalkeeper,
Erika Wolfer, played well during the scheduling gauntlet EKU just completed, recording 14 saves in two games last weekend, including a career-high eight saves at Cincinnati. Wolfer and a veteran Colonel backline consisting of senior
Deja Tennon, junior
Lauren Fant and sophomores #Emily D’Italia
and Paige Larkin# have combined to allow just 1.14 goals per game early in the 2012 season.
KSU (2-3-0) has played an early-season schedule just as tough as EKU’s, suffering narrow defeats at home against Alabama and Tennessee before beating Arkansas on the road, 1-0, last Sunday. The Owls are paced offensively by Danielle Gray, who enters the weekend with four goals and two assists.
CofC (1-3-0) defeated cross-town rival Charleston Southern last Friday before losing to No. 1 Florida State, 4-0, on Sunday. The Cougars are led by Sarah Schaidle’s two goals and Sarah Cardamone’s three assists.
This weekend’s games will be the first-ever meetings between EKU and either school on the soccer pitch.
The College of Charleston Cup is EKU’s first midseason tournament since 2006, when the Colonels competed in the University of Kentucky Invitational.
