RICHMOND, Ky. – Ashley Edmond had 17 kills and
Alexis Plagens had 15 as the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team beat Jacksonville State, 3-1, on Saturday. It was the Colonels fourth straight win.
EKU won by scores of 20-25, 25-16, 25-19 and 27-25.
Edmond added five digs and three blocks to her 17 kills. Plagens posted a .243 attack percentage to go along with her 15 kills.
Rachel Vick had nine kills and four blocks and
Dena Ott finished with 31 digs for Eastern Kentucky (11-12, 4-4 OVC).
Emily Rutherford led Jacksonville State (11-12, 4-4 OVC) with 17 kills.
Eastern held a 7-4 advantage in blocks and had 10 more kills than the Gamecocks.
JSU turned a one-point lead into a five point margin, 19-14, with a 5-1 run midway through the first set. Jacksonville State closed out the first set with a kill by Kacy Clinkenbeard and an attack error by EKU.
The Gamecocks had a 6-5 lead in the second set before the Colonels went on an 11-2 run to take control. An ace by Plagens put the home squad on top 16-8. After a kill by Edmond made it 23-16, JSU committed back-to-back errors to give the set to Eastern.
Eastern Kentucky scored four of the first five points in the third set and never looked back on its way to a 2-1 lead. Three straight JSU errors put EKU on top 8-2. Three more Gamecock errors made it 16-8. Back-to-back errors by Jacksonville State ended the set. The visitors had seven attack errors, two reception errors and one service error in the third set alone.
The Colonels looked to be cruising in the fourth set, taking a 17-10 lead on a kill by Plagens and another JSU error. However, the Gamecocks answered with an 8-3 run to get back in it. Kills by Taylor Long and Clinkenbeard capped the run and made it 20-18 in favor of Eastern.
A kill by
Johanna Boyer gave EKU match-point, 24-20, but Jacksonville State scored four straight to tie the set. With the score tied 25-25, Edmond recorded a kill and JSU committed an attack error to end the match.
The Colonels continue their three-match home stand on Tuesday against Northern Kentucky. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
