RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team will close out the regular season at in-state rival Morehead State on Friday night. First touch at Jayne Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
EKU (5-11-2, 4-4-1 OVC) is still very much in contention to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, but the Colonels need help.
EKU is currently tied for seventh place with Belmont (6-8-2, 4-4-1 OVC) in the conference standings. The top six teams in the league advance to the postseason. Sixth-place Austin Peay (10-4-2, 5-3-1 OVC), which EKU defeated during the regular season, does not play until Sunday afternoon.
The Colonels stayed in the postseason hunt with a crucial road win at Tennessee Tech last Sunday. Senior
Nikki Donnelly and sophomores
Katie Bright and
Amani Thomas all scored goals in the final 20 minutes of action to secure the victory over the Golden Eagles.
Freshman
Cassie Smith notched an assist in the win and now leads the EKU offense with five goals and three assists on the year.
Morehead State (7-10-1, 6-3-0) is safely in the conference tournament after winning four of its last five games. The Eagles are led offensively by Jade Flory, who comes into the weekend with 10 goals and five assists on the season.
Goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd, meanwhile, has recorded three shutouts this fall, all of which have come against OVC opponents.
EKU is 2-5-2 all-time versus Morehead State, although the Colonels have won two straight over the Eagles dating back to 2011. Last year, Donnelly stunned Morehead State with two goals in the final eight minutes of play to lead the Colonels to a come-from-behind overtime win in Richmond.
The OVC Tournament is scheduled to take place Nov. 7-11.
